LANGLAAGTE – A somber cloud hangs over the Zamimpilo informal settlement near Riverlea following a tragic fire that claimed the lives of four-year-old twin brothers, Isiphiwe and Isibabalo Xakwe, on Tuesday, 12 May 2026.
The young boys were reportedly left alone in their family shack when a fire broke out during the day. The flames spread with terrifying speed through the densely packed settlement, completely destroying approximately eight shacks and leaving several families homeless.

Desperate Rescue Attempt
Neighbours rushed to the scene as smoke filled the air, attempting to battle the blaze and reach the trapped children. A 42-year-old man made a courageous attempt to enter the burning structure to save the twins but was overcome by the heat and smoke. He sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Tragically, despite the community's best efforts, the fire was too intense, and the two young lives could not be saved.
Investigations and Unanswered Questions
The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation by local authorities. However, harrowing reports from the scene suggest that residents may have been fleeing an ongoing police or military operation in the area. It is alleged that in the confusion and rush to escape the operation, a stove may have been left unattended, sparking the inferno.
"The loss of such young lives is a wound to this entire community. We are waiting for the investigators to tell us exactly what happened."
