The Killing of 'King Z': A Journey from Eastgate to Heartbreak
Zwelakhe Khumalo succumbs to gunshot wounds after a brutal hijacking and robbery by his own passengers.
The e-hailing community is in mourning following the cold-blooded murder of Zwelakhe Khumalo, affectionately known as "King Z." In what was intended to be a routine trip from Eastgate Mall to Soweto, Khumalo was betrayed by those he was transporting, resulting in a violent confrontation that has once again highlighted the vulnerability of independent drivers.
According to reports from the scene, Khumalo was shot and robbed of his belongings before being left for dead. It was his colleagues—mobilizing through their internal safety networks—who discovered him and rushed him to a nearby medical facility. Despite their heroic efforts and the subsequent intervention of hospital staff, Khumalo’s injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
In a chilling digital post-script to the crime, Khumalo’s mobile device was tracked via a live location feature he had proactively activated before the trip. The signal led investigators and colleagues directly to the Dube Hostel precinct in Soweto, where the tracking eventually went dark. This digital breadcrumb trail is now a central piece of evidence as police begin their manhunt for the suspects involved.
