The Manhunt Ends: Dangerous Escapee Recaptured in Mpumalanga Hideout

After a high-stakes escape from Maphutha Malatji Hospital, the 34-year-old suspect faces the bench this Monday.

The brief and brazen period of freedom for Tumelo Raledi has come to a decisive end. In the early hours of Thursday morning, a coordinated strike by law enforcement in the Bushbuckridge policing area successfully brought the 34-year-old fugitive back into custody, ending a tense four-day manhunt that spanned provincial borders.

Raledi, a man considered exceptionally dangerous by the state, had managed to escape lawful custody on Sunday, April 26, while receiving medical treatment under police guard at Maphutha Malatji Hospital. His disappearance triggered an intensive search operation across the Mopani District, with authorities warning the public of his history of violent crimes, including two counts of murder, rape, and attempted murder allegedly committed between 2023 and 2025.

The breakthrough came at approximately 03:30 on April 30, when "concerned citizens" provided critical intelligence regarding Raledi’s location. Acting on the tip, police descended upon a residence in Bushbuckridge where the suspect was attempting to hide. Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, the Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, has lauded this collaboration, citing it as a benchmark for how community-led intelligence can paralyze criminal activity.
