PRETORIA – Suspended National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola made a high-profile appearance at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday morning. Unlike his initial appearance on April 21st where he stood alone, the 61-year-old was joined in the dock by alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and 12 high-ranking police officials.
The group faces serious allegations regarding their roles in a R360 million tender scandal involving Medicare24, a company directed by Matlala. The State has moved to merge Masemola’s case with that of the other 13 suspects to present a unified prosecution.

Charges and Suspension
Masemola is specifically charged with violating the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA). These allegations prompted President Ramaphosa to suspend the Commissioner shortly after the case first surfaced.
Despite now standing alongside an alleged criminal kingpin and a dozen fellow officers, Masemola has consistently maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings.
"The case relates to the R360 million awarded to Medicare24, with the State looking to link the actions of the leadership to the alleged criminal activities of the company's director."
