PERRIDGEVALE – A suspected cable thief learned a painful lesson in the early hours of the morning after he was caught and injured by the very infrastructure he was allegedly trying to sabotage.
The incident occurred in Diaz Road when a vigilant security response officer noticed suspicious activity near a manhole during a routine patrol. Upon closer inspection, the officer discovered a man actively removing cables from the manhole.

A Burnt Discovery
After calling for backup and detaining the suspect, it became clear that the theft had gone wrong. The man was found with significant burns on his hands, consistent with a high-voltage electric shock sustained while attempting to cut the live wires.
Authorities recovered approximately 90 metres of stolen cable already in the suspect's possession. A panga, believed to have been used as the primary tool to hack through the cabling, was also confiscated at the scene.
Police Custody
Members of the SAPS from Mount Road Police Station arrived shortly after the security detention to take over the scene. The suspect was taken into custody and is expected to face charges related to the theft of essential infrastructure and possession of stolen property.
Infrastructure Warning: Tampering with electrical manholes and cables is not only illegal but life-threatening. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers involved in cable theft.
