SOUTH AFRICA – The South African Police Service (SAPS) has issued a grave warning regarding the reckless handling of firearms after a viral social media video emerged showing several women allegedly playing with guns inside a private residence.
The 54-second clip, which has circulated widely over the past 24 hours, shows women laughing and cocking firearms—including a black pistol—while pointing them at each other. National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe expressed "serious concern," noting that the individuals involved do not appear to be properly trained or authorized to handle such dangerous weapons.

Legal Consequences for Owners
SAPS reminded the public that in terms of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000, any person handling a firearm must be legally authorized and possess a valid license. Crucially, registered firearm owners are held legally responsible for their weapons.
Owners could face criminal charges if they allow unauthorized or untrained individuals access to their firearms. Police also clarified that even if the objects in the video were imitation firearms, toy guns, or blank guns, legal implications still apply if they are used to create fear, intimidation, or the reasonable perception of a real threat.
Reporting Misuse
The police emphasized that firearms should never be used for entertainment purposes or as "props" for social media content. Such behavior not only endangers those involved but poses a significant public safety risk.
"Firearms are not toys and should never be used recklessly or displayed irresponsibly for social media content. We urge the community to act responsibly."
