BENONI – A 38-year-old foreign national is behind bars following a high-stakes police raid on a Bedford Avenue internet café, which was allegedly serving as a hub for the manufacturing of high-quality fraudulent South African documents.

The investigation was sparked by a wave of suspicious activity in the Chief Albert Luthuli informal settlement in Cloverdene. Local authorities were alerted to residents using "fraudulent electricity receipts" that didn't match the national grid's records. Following the trail, officers were led straight to a seemingly ordinary café in the heart of Benoni.

A Menu of Forgery: IDs, Permits, and Licences

Inside the establishment, police reportedly found the suspect in the act. According to SAPS, the man admitted to printing and selling fake electricity receipts for R250 a piece. However, the scope of the operation went far beyond utility bills.

Search teams uncovered a staggering array of forged documents, including:

  • Fake Smart ID Cards
  • Counterfeit Work Permits
  • Traffic Register Certificates
  • Foreign Driver’s Licences and Appointment Letters

High-end printing equipment and specialized software believed to be the tools of the trade were confiscated as evidence.

Facing the Law

The suspect is currently in custody and is expected to make his first appearance at the Benoni Magistrate’s Court shortly. He faces severe charges, including fraud and multiple immigration offences. Police have warned the public that purchasing or using these documents is a criminal act that can lead to immediate arrest.
