JOHANNESBURG – A devastating scene has left the community of Lenasia South and the local schooling fraternity in deep mourning following a fatal collision that claimed the life of a Grade 12 learner.

Four female matriculants from Lenasia South Secondary School were walking home after attending crucial weekend intervention (extra) classes when they were struck by a speeding vehicle at the intersection of Sheffield Road and Lancaster Street.

Young Life Cut Short

Tragically, 17-year-old Tinyoko Nomthandazo Vilakazi sustained fatal, high-impact injuries and was declared deceased on the scene by emergency personnel. Her body has since been removed to the Sebokeng Mortuary.

The remaining three matriculants, all minors estimated to be 17 years old, sustained serious injuries. They were stabilized on-site before being rushed to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital and other nearby medical facilities for urgent, specialized trauma care.

Preliminary reports from the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) state that a silver BMW was traveling northbound on Sheffield Road when the adult male driver lost control of the vehicle. The car veered off the asphalt entirely and ploughed directly into the four pedestrians walking on the roadside. The driver escaped the wreckage without physical injuries.

JMPD Investigates Culpable Homicide Case

While angry community members at the scene widely alleged that alcohol and reckless speed played a significant role, JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla noted that arriving officers' preliminary assessments did not explicitly log immediate intoxication indicators. However, a case docket of **culpable homicide** has been formally opened at the Lenasia South SAPS station to systematically evaluate the vehicle dynamics and final cause.

The Gauteng Department of Education, alongside local community forums, has extended profound condolences to the Vilakazi family and wished a speedy, complete recovery to the three hospitalized pupils fighting for their lives.

"Our children are facing extreme vulnerability simply trying to better their futures through extra classes. Road safety regulations around our schools must be urgently reinforced."
