GIYANI – The Giyani Regional Court has officially closed a tragic 2021 murder file, convicting and sentencing 24-year-old Thulani Jeffery Maluleke of Dzingidzingi Village to 15 years' direct imprisonment for the cold-blooded murder of 26-year-old Hlulani Ngoveni.
The final verdict, handed down on Friday, 19 June 2026, brings an end to a long-standing legal battle that began with a lethal confrontation following a heavy night of tavern-hopping.

A Fatal Drinking Spree
The court detailed that on Saturday, 20 November 2021, the deceased, Ngoveni, was socializing peacefully with his close companions at a local tavern in Dzingidzingi Village. Maluleke approached the table and demanded to join them for drinks, a request that Ngoveni firmly declined.
Seeking to avoid confrontation, Ngoveni and his friends moved to an alternate tavern in Homu 14C. However, the accused aggressively forced his way into their private transport to shadow them. The group later traveled to a third establishment at Risinga View, staying out until the early hours of Sunday morning.
The situation escalated into violence while walking toward the local taxi rank. A heated argument erupted between the two men, culminating in Maluleke pulling a sharp weapon and stabbing Ngoveni directly in the neck. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital but was tragically certified dead upon arrival.
Tireless Police Investigation Clinches Victory
Following the attack, the murder investigation was assigned to veteran Detective Captain Adam Hobyani. Through swift, diligent footwork and tracking, Hobyani successfully uncovered the suspect’s secret hiding place and arrested him.
Though Maluleke was initially granted a R2,000 bail during his early appearances at the Giyani Magistrate's Court, the state compiled an airtight case file before transferring the matter to the regional trial division. On Friday, the judge rejected the defense's pleas, sentencing Maluleke to a straight 15-year term with zero options for a fine.
"Alcohol abuse continues to fuel senseless killings in our neighborhoods. This sentence sends a loud warning that the courts will protect human lives."
