PRETORIA – President Cyril Ramaphosa is facing the most turbulent period of his presidency following a landmark ruling by the Constitutional Court that has breathed new life into the "Phala Phala" impeachment process.

The highest court in the land ruled on Friday, May 8, that the National Assembly acted unlawfully in 2022 when it voted to block an inquiry into the scandal. This decision effectively forces Parliament to re-open the investigation into whether the President committed serious misconduct regarding the theft of thousands of dollars from his Limpopo farm.

"I Am Not Resigning"

Addressing the nation on Monday evening, a defiant Ramaphosa made it clear that he has no intention of stepping down. He argued that the court's judgment does not find him guilty of any crime but rather addresses the procedural failures of Parliament.

The President maintains that the $580,000 found hidden in a sofa at his Phala Phala farm was the legitimate result of a buffalo sale and not the proceeds of crime. He has announced that his legal team will launch an "expeditious review" to challenge the original panel's report, which he claims is fundamentally flawed.

ANC Divided as Pressure Mounts

Inside Luthuli House, the atmosphere is reportedly tense. The ANC National Executive Committee is scheduled to meet to discuss the implications of the court ruling. While the President’s supporters argue that the legal process must be allowed to run its course, opposition parties are already calling for his immediate removal, citing the court's ruling as a victory for accountability.

Despite the political firestorm, Ramaphosa continues his official duties, opening the 2026 Africa Travel Indaba in Durban this morning, where he emphasized the importance of stability for the country's tourism economy.
