MAMELODI – A 62-year-old school gardener has been handed a double life sentence for the repeated rape of a seven-year-old learner. Muthi Lazarus Rathlogo received his sentence at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court this week, marking a significant victory in the fight against gender-based violence.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana confirmed that Rathlogo was convicted on two counts of rape. Despite the accused pleading not guilty and attempting to use his age and health as grounds for leniency, the state, led by prosecutor Mpho Monyane, argued successfully for the maximum penalty.
The young victim received comprehensive medical, psychological, and legal assistance through the Thuthuzela Care Centre in Mamelodi. The acting director of Public Prosecutions praised the collaborative efforts of the investigating team and the NPA for securing a conviction in a case that represented a profound betrayal of trust.
This sentencing serves as a stern warning to those who exploit vulnerable children within educational institutions. The community of Mamelodi has expressed relief at the verdict, as justice is finally served for the young survivor and her family.
