Village Raids: Joint Task Force Targets Illegal Employment in Spaza Sector
Police and Home Affairs officials sweep through Ga-Mokgwathi and surrounding villages in a major compliance operation.
A unified front between the Mokwakwaila Police and Tzaneen Immigration Officers has sent a clear message to business owners in the Mopani District this week. A strategic joint operation conducted on Monday, April 27, led to the apprehension of 12 individuals following a series of targeted inspections at local spaza shops.
The operation focused on the villages of Mokwakwaila, Ga-Mokgwathi, and Ga-Ramotshinyadi, where officials scrutinized the legal standing of both shop operators and their staff. Ten Ethiopian nationals, aged between 19 and 35, were taken into custody after failing to produce valid documentation, leading to charges for contravening the Immigration Act.
In a significant move against local labor law violations, two documented foreign nationals were also arrested. These individuals face criminal charges for the illegal hiring of undocumented workers, a practice that Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has vowed to eradicate. Hadebe cautioned that business owners bear the legal responsibility to verify the status of every employee on their payroll.
