KZN Grade 11 Pupil Attempts Suicide Following Relentless School Bullying
EHEKWENI – A 17-year-old secondary school student in the Ehekweni Region of KwaZulu-Natal is fighting for her life in hospital after attempting to take her own life due to severe bullying. The incident, which occurred on Thursday afternoon, has sparked widespread concern over the safety of pupils in provincial schools.
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) responded to multiple distress calls at approximately 16:55 after the teenager was found unconscious by her mother. Upon arrival, paramedics discovered the girl unresponsive on the kitchen floor with self-inflicted injuries and several empty pill containers nearby.
Viral Video and Digital Trauma
The Grade 11 student had reportedly been the target of a group of classmates over an extended period. The situation escalated recently after a video of her being physically assaulted was circulated on social media platforms. The "viral" nature of the bullying significantly increased the emotional distress of the victim, leading to the tragic events of Thursday afternoon.
The teenager was stabilized at the scene before being rushed to a nearby medical facility. While her current condition has not been officially released, medical teams are working around the clock to provide the necessary intervention and support.
A Call for Stronger Action
Authorities and education officials are expected to launch a formal investigation into the school’s management of the bullying and the identification of the individuals involved in the assault and the filming. This case highlights the urgent need for robust anti-bullying policies and improved mental health support for vulnerable students in South Africa.
