POLOKWANE – The public broadcaster’s ability to serve the people of Limpopo has come under heavy fire following revelations that the SABC Polokwane office is operating without a single dedicated Sepedi or Xitsonga reporter.

In a province renowned for its linguistic diversity, the newsroom has reportedly dwindled to just two main journalists. These individuals are expected to cover the entire, vast Limpopo landscape—an impossible task that has left major community stories untold and residents feeling abandoned.

Union Blasts "Irregular" Management

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has stepped in, slamming the current state of the news division. The union’s provincial coordinator has accused management of gross mismanagement and failing to prioritize the filling of critical vacant posts.

The heat is particularly on News Editor Jubie Matlou. A recent CCMA ruling reportedly found Matlou’s appointment to be irregular, labeling him a product of political maneuvering. “We are not surprised to see how he is failing to employ and manage the news division,” the CWU stated. “People of Limpopo are suffering from service delivery issues and their voices will never be heard.”

Outraged Residents Threaten to March

The lack of coverage has sparked a social media outcry from community leaders. Moraba Rakgomo from Jane Furse expressed frustration, noting that whenever journalists are requested for service delivery protests, they are told none are available.

Lethabo Moloko from Ga-Mashashane went further, suggesting that the time for polite requests has passed. “Now I understand why we never got covered... We must march to SABC offices; we are not getting services,” Moloko warned.

As of the time of publication, the SABC has not responded to requests for comment regarding the staffing crisis or the CCMA ruling.
